The Executive Mayor of Isuikwuato Local Government Area, Hon. Chinedu Ekeke, has joined government leaders, security stakeholders, traditional rulers and community representatives at the maiden South-East Regional Security Summit held in Umuahia, Abia State.
The summit, themed “Collaborative Approaches to Strengthening Security and Regional Stability,” brought together key stakeholders from across the South-East to deliberate on the region’s security challenges and explore collective approaches towards achieving lasting peace and stability.
The high-level gathering was convened by the Federal Ministry of Defence in collaboration with the Office of the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Community Engagement, South-East, and hosted by the Abia State Government.
Participants included senior federal and state government officials, security chiefs, representatives of the five South-East states, traditional rulers, lawmakers, religious leaders, civil society organisations and other stakeholders.
Among the prominent participants were the Minister of Defence, General Christopher Musa (Rtd.); Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris; Governor Alex Otti of Abia State; Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Benjamin Kalu, retired Nigerian Army Lieutenant general and former Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Onyeabor Azubuike Ihejirika, Major General Ike Omar Sanda Nwachukwu (Rtd.), CFR, mni, alongside senior military and security officials.
Strengthening Collaboration for Regional Security
A major focus of the summit was the need for stronger collaboration in addressing the security challenges confronting the South-East.
Stakeholders emphasised that sustainable peace and security require more than conventional security operations, highlighting the importance of community engagement, intelligence sharing, good governance and closer cooperation between governments, security agencies, traditional institutions and citizens.
The discussions also underscored the role of modern technology and improved intelligence gathering in identifying and responding to security threats, as well as the need to strengthen early warning systems at the community level.
Participants further highlighted the importance of addressing social and economic factors that can contribute to insecurity, including youth unemployment, drug abuse and misinformation.
Mayor Ekeke’s Participation
Mayor Ekeke’s participation in the summit reflects the importance the Isuikwuato Local Government Administration places on peace, security and community stability.
As the government closest to the people, local government administrations have an important role to play in promoting communication and cooperation among residents, traditional institutions, community leaders and relevant security agencies.
The summit also provided an opportunity for the Mayor to engage with federal, state and regional stakeholders on issues relating to security and the collective responsibility of governments and communities in promoting peace.
For Isuikwuato, the emphasis on grassroots participation, intelligence sharing and community engagement remains particularly relevant in strengthening safety and maintaining an environment conducive to social and economic development.
A Collective Commitment to Peace
The summit ended with renewed calls for stronger cooperation among governments, security institutions, traditional and community leaders, civil society organisations and citizens.
Participants emphasised the need for improved coordination, stronger grassroots engagement, intelligence sharing and sustained efforts towards addressing the factors that contribute to insecurity.
