The people of Umuobiala came together in a colourful celebration of culture, thanksgiving and communal unity as the community marked its Iriji, the traditional New Yam Festival.
The celebration provided an opportunity for the people to offer prayers and thanksgiving to God for a bountiful harvest, while also expressing gratitude for the safe return of sons and daughters of the community who travelled home to be part of the occasion.
The event was marked by a rich display of Igbo culture, featuring traditional dances, music, masquerade performances and speeches by community leaders.
A major highlight of the celebration was the symbolic cutting and eating of the new yam by Ndi Eze, in keeping with the cherished traditions associated with the Iriji festival.
The occasion also featured a special musical performance by one of Umuobiala’s celebrated sons and musical icons, Osei Jnr, popularly known as Ubosinachi, who was the artiste of the day.
A Celebration of Heritage and Community
Beyond the celebration of the harvest, the Umuobiala Iriji served as an occasion for members of the community to reconnect, celebrate their shared heritage and strengthen the bonds that unite them.
Through its music, dances, masquerade displays and other cultural expressions, the event reflected the enduring importance of preserving traditions and passing the values and identity of the people from one generation to another.
