Policy Statement
Isuikwuato Local Government Area is committed to developing and promoting tourism as a catalyst for economic growth, cultural preservation, environmental conservation, job creation, and community development. The Council recognizes the immense tourism potential of Isuikwuato and is dedicated to positioning the Local Government Area as a preferred destination for visitors, investors, and nature enthusiasts.
Background
Isuikwuato is endowed with breathtaking landscapes, unique rock formations, rivers, hills, forests, educational institutions, and a rich cultural heritage that offer tremendous opportunities for tourism development. Through strategic planning, infrastructure improvement, environmental conservation, and partnerships with communities and private investors, the Local Government seeks to unlock the economic and social benefits of tourism.
The Visit Isuikwuato initiative, a brainchild birthed by Isuikwuato Environmental Advancement Advocates (ISEAA) in partnership with the Isuikwuato Local Government Council, was established to showcase the Local Government’s natural attractions, cultural heritage, and investment opportunities while encouraging domestic and international tourism.
Policy Objectives
This policy seeks to:
- Promote Isuikwuato as a leading tourism destination in Abia State and Nigeria.
- Preserve and promote the cultural heritage and traditions of our communities.
- Protect and conserve natural tourist attractions and ecosystems.
- Encourage investment in tourism, hospitality, and recreational facilities.
- Create employment and business opportunities through tourism.
- Support community participation in tourism development.
- Promote eco-tourism and sustainable tourism practices.
Guiding Principles
The implementation of this policy shall be guided by the following principles:
Sustainability Tourism development shall promote environmental conservation and responsible use of natural resources.
Community Participation Local communities shall be encouraged to actively participate in tourism planning, development, and management.
Cultural Preservation The customs, traditions, historical sites, and cultural identity of Isuikwuato shall be protected and promoted.
Public-Private Partnership The Local Government shall encourage partnerships with private investors, hospitality businesses, development partners, and tourism organizations.
Tourism Assets
The Local Government recognizes and promotes attractions including, but not limited to:
- Umunnekwu Sand Beach
- Uzu waterfall, Umunnekwu
- Nkume Mpakwasi, Umuasua
- Abia State University (ABSU), Uturu
- National Root Crops Research Institute (NRCRI), Umudike Outstation, where applicable
- Scenic hills, rivers, forests, and agricultural landscapes
- Traditional festivals and cultural heritage sites
- Local markets, arts, crafts, and cuisine
Additional attractions may be identified and developed over time.
Current Initiatives
In furtherance of this policy, the Local Government shall:
- Promote the Visit Isuikwuato initiative as the official tourism promotion platform.
- Develop digital content showcasing tourist attractions.
- Support environmental conservation around tourism sites.
- Encourage hospitality and tourism investments.
- Collaborate with the Isuikwuato Environmental Advancement Advocates (ISEAA) and other stakeholders to promote eco-tourism.
- Improve awareness of Isuikwuato’s tourism potential through media and public engagement.
Implementation Framework
The Local Government shall work with traditional institutions, host communities, government agencies, environmental organizations, investors, and development partners to:
- Improve tourism infrastructure.
- Enhance access to tourist sites.
- Promote responsible tourism.
- Support local businesses that contribute to the tourism value chain.
- Encourage investment in hotels, resorts, recreational facilities, and related services.
